An Vownder

An Vownder is a contemporary coastal house occupying an elevated position looking out over the sea on the south coast of Cornwall. Set within an area of outstanding natural beauty, the design carefully balances the desire for expansive views with the need to respect its immediate context.

The topography of the site ensures that the simple single storey form allows the primary living spaces to enjoy uninterrupted views of the surrounding coastline, watching the comings and goings from the nearby harbour. The plan is organised around a central hall rising to a roof light at the apex of the hipped roof. From here, the house opens in four directions, drawing light deep into the plan and establishing visual connections between garden, sky and sea.

The external materials are kept deliberately restrained, with the roof and walls wrapped in natural slate, while the sheltered recessed areas are clad in a softer sweet chestnut. Internally the main living and circulation spaces have a robust granite tiled floor, transitioning to a gentle light oak in the bedroom areas. High levels of insulation and air-tightness, coupled with careful consideration of the building’s orientation and the need for solar shading have ensured a comfortable internal environment with extremely low energy demands.

The result is a house that resolves a complex and exposed site through clarity and restraint, creating a calm and enduring place to live within the coastal landscape.
