Penn Gwel

Penn Gwel is a contemporary reinterpretation of a traditional farmstead, set amongst the rural field networks and ancient granite stones of West Penwith.

Conceived as a pair of barns, the design sensitively responds to the surrounding low-lying timber, stone and slate buildings, respectful of its agricultural setting within an AONB.

The two barns sit at right angles to each other and are linked by a low flat roofed lobby space. To one side is the bedroom wing with bathrooms and a utility space, while to the other is the main open plan kitchen, dining and living space.

Key rooms are orientated towards the views, primarily to the south and west, with Rosewall Hill and its granite outcrops and remnants of old mining activities visible on a clear day.

The highly energy efficient timber frame structure is clad in UK sourced timber and natural slate, matching a number of the nearby buildings. Internally the floor finish is a combination of polished micro cement and timber, while the walls are predominantly finished in lime plaster for a softer finish. Outside, the landscape design ensures the house nestles simply into its rural setting, with Cornish stone walling, native hedgerows and wildflower meadows.
