Gwelefan is a contemporary north coast house in Porthtowan, Cornwall, replacing a former bungalow and carefully stepped into the hillside to maximise far-reaching sea views towards Godrevy Lighthouse and St Ives.
Sandwiched between houses of varying ages and styles, the new dwelling is set into the cliff to help minimise its visual impact while ensuring the panoramic coastal views are maximised.
The house is approached from the rear and accessed via a bridge link to the upper floor, the simple north facing elevation discreetly concealing the spaces within. The elevations are clad in larch, utilising a variety of widths to highlight different elements of the building, while keeping the overall aesthetic deliberately simple and low-key.
The upper floor living spaces benefit from a full width balcony while the over-hanging roof helps to manage summer-time heat gains. This arrangement ensures that the spectacular views to the sea are maximised from the living and dining spaces. Downstairs, three bedrooms each have views of the coast and direct access to a south facing terrace and garden.

We love spending time in the house, its an incredibly comfortable, enjoyable space orientated around our amazing views but we also really appreciate it when we see it from afar - on our way back from a cliff walk, or even looking up at it when we are in the sea!

KAST were engaged and a pleasure to work with from the off. They really listened and understood what we wanted and were full of great ideas. Bright, talented, thoughtful people to work with - recommended.

To say the house has changed would be a massive understatement. It's gone from a grotty bungalow to a beautiful, energy-efficient, wood-clad house that really makes the most of our amazing sea views.
