St Michael's

client: St Michael's Secondary School

value: £2.63 million

location: Camborne, Cornwall

St Michael's Catholic Secondary School Camborne is a new state funded Free School Academy and is the only Catholic secondary school in Cornwall. Working with BAM Construction the new facility is located on the site of the Old County Grammar School in Camborne. Keeping the original Grammar School building ensured the school was able to unite the best of the traditional with the best of modern educational design.

The deliberate location of the new building to the rear of the site allows for the existing building’s positive impact on the conservation area to be preserved. The Old Grammar School was constructed in 1908 and is very much a part of the local fabric, so the decision to keep the new building away from it was seen as planning “good manners.” The building was completed in the Autumn of 2013.
