John Ferneley College

client: Leicestershire County Council

value: £14.14 million

location: Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire

An 800 place college building to replace the existing John Ferneley High School in Melton Mowbray. The design proposals set out to produce a school that would be an exemplar of sustainable design and construction. This ethos informs every aspect, from its orientation on site, to the selection of natural materials and the use of natural ventilation, day lighting techniques and landscaping concept.

The layout of the building aids natural ventilation and employs secure nighttime cooling. Materials have been selected not only to support the sustainability agenda, but also to provide natural self finished, low maintenance finishes. Carbon consumption has been reduced by over 60%, incorporating sound passive strategies alongside appropriate renewable energy technologies, including a 450kw wood pellet biomass boiler, rain water harvesting and a 25kw wind turbine.
