GWELEFAN
Clients: Claire and Nicholas
Location: Porthtowan, Cornwall
Completed: 2023
Perched on Eastcliff overlooking the village of Porthtowan, Gwelefan enjoys far reaching views along the north coast of Cornwall towards Godrevy Lighthouse and St Ives.
Sandwiched between houses of varying ages and styles, the new dwelling replaces a tired old bungalow. The increase in height is managed by digging into the site, forming a retaining wall behind the property and setting the building down.
The house is approached from the rear and accessed via a bridge link to the upper floor, the simple north facing elevation discreetly concealing the spaces within.
The elevations are clad in larch, utilising a variety of widths to highlight different elements of the building, while keeping the overall aesthetic deliberately simple and low-key.
The upper floor living spaces benefit from a full width balcony while the over-hanging roof helps to manage summer-time heat gains. This arrangement ensures that the spectacular views to the sea are maximised from the living and dining spaces.
“We love spending time in the house, its an incredibly comfortable, enjoyable space orientated around our amazing views but we also really appreciate it when we see it from afar - on our way back from a cliff walk, or even looking up at it when we are in the sea!”

Downstairs, three bedrooms each have views of the coast and direct access to a south facing terrace and garden.
“KAST were engaged and a pleasure to work with from the off. They really listened and understood what we wanted and were full of great ideas. Bright, talented, thoughtful people to work with – recommended.”
