Bath Eco House

Client: Private client

Value: Undisclosed

Location: Bath, Wiltshire

An innovative response for a family home, to a previously problematic site on the outskirts of Bath. Planning conditions dictated that the proposed new building should not exceed the footprint of the existing house on the site, whilst keeping below the ridge height of a neighbouring garage. Our response was to maximise the area above ground, with two wings of sleeping accommodation either side of a central living, dining and kitchen space. Meanwhile, favourable ground conditions have permitted the introduction of a subterranean swimming pool and fitness suite, all hidden from view. The discrete scale of the new house has met with a positive response from the local planning authority. Natural materials are used throughout, with timber framing, locally sourced timber cladding, lime render and bio-diverse green roofs complementing the straw bale structure.
